Choose the Right Location to Make Your Home Office Work
You know yourself best, so put your office in a space that helps your productivity. Is it easier for you to focus when you’re in a quiet area and undisturbed? Maybe you do better work with household traffic and noise in the background. If you’re a parent, it may be best to set your office up near the playroom.
Create an Environment for Work
Allow yourself time to set up your office space. Paint the room in a color that feels conducive to your workflow. Arrange your home office so you’ll have easy access to the tools you need to do your job. You will likely need at least a few power outlets. Purchase a surge-protecting power strip so you can plug in the computer, printer, speakers, a lamp, and charge your phone. If you’ll meet with clients in your home, make sure you have a small seating area.
Find the Right Desk and Chair
You’ll be spending a lot of hours in your home office, so it’s important that it’s comfortable and matches your work style. Choose a desk with enough space for your computer, mousepad, and monitors. Find a chair that is stylish and supportive.
Lighting Helps Make Your Home Office Work
Lighting is important in the work environment. Ideally, you’ll be able to work near a window. Natural light is helpful for vision and balancing moods. If natural light is not an option, go with a combination of general lighting and task lighting.
Location of lighting is also important. Overhead lighting that is directly above the computer screen can cause a glare. Lighting immediately behind a computer screen can lead to eyestrain. Ideally, you will be able to control the brightness of the lighting in your home office.
Add Personal Touches
To make your home office work for you, add personality to the space. Hang a favorite painting or some of your child’s art. If coffee is essential, set up a coffee station for you to use while working. Choose an attractive throw rug to add color and texture to the space. Hang a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign to alert family members to important calls or meetings when you shouldn’t be bothered. Finally, don’t hesitate to adjust. If you’re not comfortable or you don’t feel productive in your office, rearrange, repaint, and redecorate.
