To maintain a healthy home, keep air contaminants to a minimum. The air inside of our homes is often just as polluted as outdoor air, if not worse. Mold, dust, and pet dander are just a few of the common irritants that collect indoors. Here are some steps you can take to improve indoor air quality.

Keep Your Home Clean to Improve Indoor Air Quality

One of the best ways to improve indoor air quality is by keeping your home clean. Dust surfaces and vacuum rugs and carpets at least twice each week. Choose a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to trap even the smallest irritants. Clean up any spills right away. Water can seep into the carpet and contribute to mold growth.

Use an Air Purifier

Purchase air purification machines to use in bedrooms and common areas. These are especially helpful for family members who suffer from allergies or asthma. Air purifiers are designed to work within a certain area, so be sure to choose a machine that covers the square footage of the space you need to treat.

Change Your HVAC Filters

The heating and cooling system in your home has filters that should be replaced every 30 to 90 days. These filters trap contaminants and help to keep your home’s air cleaner. Change the filter as recommended by the manufacturer and you’ll improve air quality while also heating and cooling your home more efficiently.

Allow Fresh Air to Circulate

When the weather is nice, open the windows to allow air to circulate throughout your home. The breeze will help move contaminants out and replace stagnant indoor air with fresh outdoor air.

Add Some Houseplants

Use indoor plants to help clean the air. Some studies have shown that houseplants help improve air quality. Boston fern, pothos, and peace lily are some popular and easy to care for houseplants that will help filter contaminants from the air. When keeping plants inside, be sure not to overwater them, as this can promote mold growth.

Brush Pets Regularly to Improve Indoor Air Quality

If you have pets, make time in your schedule to regularly bathe them and brush their fur. Grooming your pets is good for you and the animal, plus you’ll reduce the amount of pet hair and dander in your home.
